Privacy Notice

Parley is a pilot website that brings together headlines from Philippine newsrooms. This notice explains what personal information we collect, why, and what you can do about it, as required by the Data Privacy Act of 2012 (Republic Act No. 10173).

Who we are

You can read without an account

Reading Parley never requires signing in. You only need an account to take part in discussions.

What we collect if you create an account

• Your email address, to send you login links and to identify your account.
• A display name you choose, shown next to anything you post.
• When you agreed to these terms, as a record of your consent.

That is all. We don't ask for your real name, phone number, birthday, location or payment details.

Anonymous usage counts

For everyone, signed in or not, we count visits and which tabs and links are used (for example, “someone opened the Inquirer edition”). To tell a returning visitor from a new one, your browser keeps a random code in its local storage. It isn't a cookie, isn't linked to your account or email, and contains nothing about you. You can clear it anytime by clearing your browser's site data. We also use Vercel Web Analytics, which counts page views without cookies.

How we use reading data

We use usage counts to improve Parley and to show news publishers how their stories are read. Anything we share with publishers or anyone else is in aggregate only (for example, “1,200 readers opened Business stories this week”), never about an individual.

Who else handles the data

• Supabase stores accounts and usage counts on servers in Singapore.
• Vercel hosts the website and provides page-view analytics.

They process data only to run Parley for us. Because these servers are outside the Philippines, your data is transferred abroad; we choose providers that protect it to a standard comparable to Philippine law.

We never sell your information or use it for advertising.

How long we keep it

We keep your account until you delete it. Anonymous usage counts are kept for the pilot and deleted or reduced to totals within 12 months after the pilot ends.

Your rights

Under the Data Privacy Act you have the right to:

• be informed about how your data is used (this notice);
• access the personal data we hold about you;
• correct it (you can change your display name on the Account page);
• object to processing, or withdraw your consent;
• have your data deleted: use “Delete my account” on the Account page anytime, and your email and display name are removed immediately;
• get a copy of your data in a common format;
• be compensated for damages caused by misuse of your data; and
• file a complaint with the National Privacy Commission (privacy.gov.ph).

Keeping it safe

Accounts use one-time login links instead of passwords. Access to our database is limited to our servers, and data is encrypted in transit. If a breach ever puts your data at risk, we will tell you and the National Privacy Commission as the law requires.

Changes

If we change this notice in a way that affects you, we'll tell you on the site and, if you have an account, by email.
